Natures menu for your dog:
B.A.R.F. is the short version for Bones And Raw Food or Biologically Appropiate Raw Food. These concepts arose in the beginning of the 1990's and the pioneers for this way of feeding, are the australian vets Ian Billinghurst and Richard Pitcairn.
The philosophy behind BARF-feeding, is in its 'simpleness' to feed dogs as natural as possible with raw meat and bones, and to give dogs the correct nutritional enzymes, vitamins and minerals in various raw meat & bone products, without any kind of artificial additives.
Billinghurst and o lot of others, are using the wolf as guide in the way of feeding, because wolfes and dogs are 80% alike in behavior and instincts and their anatomy is nearly a 100% alike.
Like the wolf, the dog eats raw meat. It makes the dog primarily a carnivor. The dog is a hunter and will eat anything that can be caught, however this will be an insect, a mouse or a larger prey. When a dog is hungry, it will eat anything. This is why the dog is called an omnivore as well.
Some say that a wolf will not eat the stomache contents from a prey, but they will eat berries, frugt and greens that they will find on their way, and the wolf will get the nutritions from berries ect. Others say that the wolf in the wild will eat the stomache contents of the prey, and that the wolf will get the nutritions from here, and that the wolf through this will get the nutritions from berries, fruit and greens. Wether the dogs diet should contain a special prepared fruit- or vegetables imitation is for yourself to decide.
That the food is varied and balanced over time means, that the dog does not nesecciraly need to have all food items every day, but alternately ovet the weeks, raw meat and raw meatfull bones are the most important ingrediences. This could for exampel be chicken, duck, turkey, lamb, horse or beef ect with or without bones. You can give the nutritional correct enzymes, vitamins and minerals in the varied raw meat and bone products, without any kind of artificial additives.
In the wild will have their need for calcium covered by eating the bones of their prey, and that is why rwa meat and bones are a very important ingredience of the everyday diet - and to get raw meatfull bones at least once a week, wich also will clean the teeth and keep gingivitis away. Raw bones are soft and do not shatter: Do not EVER give your dog boiled or any other way proccesed bones, because they will easely shatter and can do damage in the dogs stomache an intestines. Dogs will throw stomps of bones up if they can't digest them, and it is always better that the dog will throw things up that it can't digest rather that it will stay inside and do harm.
Basicly all sorts of meat and bone can be used - think wolf and nature like for example: Beef, veal, lamb, chicken, turkey rabbit, horse, fish, deer, all sorts of giblets, tripe ect. Giblets is to use with care. Allways mix with some other meat, because it is too hard for the dogs stomache and can cause diarria.
If you choose to feed fish, the product has be frozen by at least minus 20 degrees celcius in at least 24 hours before using. This way you will kill parasites. You also have to be carefull about pork meat/ bones - it can cause constipation or other stomache problems.
The allegation that dogs will get a protein poisoning of all this meat, is false. Meat containes only 18-20% protein, and dryfood contains 25-30% protein. Every type of meat/ bone contains different proteins, vitamins and minerals. Therfor it is important to feed something different as much as possible, so that you will cover the dogs needs for proteins, vitamins and minerals.
It is individually how much food your dog needs on a daily basis: It all depends on the activity level, combustion and much more. A golden rule, wich is ONLY A GUIDE: Dogs untill the age of 6 months need 5-10% of their body weight, after that 5% untill the age of 18 months.
Adult dogs with a normal activity level are to give 2% of their bodyweight, and very few dogs need 3% of their bodyweight. Is the dog a little to choppy, then feed 2% of the wanted weight.
It is recommended to have a weekly lentday, and there is no need to be affraid of that, because it is natural. In the liver fat is stored, and the liver makes sure that there is enough fat to live from on the lentday. The liver produces insulin i cooperation with the pancreas and makes sure that the dog won't go 'cold', because it has a lentday.
The stool will become a lot less by feeding BARF, because this food is absorbed better by the dog. The stool is more solid, darkbrown/ black and you should be able to kick it without it getting stock to your shoes. Is the stool more light in colour, it is because your dog have had bones. Dogs sleep after feeding, and especially after a bone day and digests the food in another way than by complete food. You still hear mythes and meet prejudices, that this way of feeding will make your dog aggressive and fierce, but this is rooted in ignorance.
In the past few years, a lot of private sellers, who guides and sell raw food in Denmark. It is recommended that you are careful where you get your guidance and your raw food, especially if you have a sick dog. There is so much information to find everywhere - also very different information about this way of feeding in books, on homepages, in debategroups online.
Are you having just the smallest doubt or do you have a sick dog, then do your dog a favor, and seek advise and guidance by your vet or others with knowledge or an education in BARF.
